Seminar by Dr. Mustafa Safa Karagöz: “Among Molecules, People, and Mentalities – My Story Across Three Scientific Cultures”

14.10.2025

Dr. Mustafa Safa Karagöz will give a seminar titled “Among Molecules, People, and Mentalities: My Story Across Three Scientific Cultures” on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 14:00 to 15:00, at Fakülteler Building, Room CZ04.

After completing his undergraduate and master’s studies in Turkey, Dr. Karagöz continued his academic journey in Germany at Technische Universität Braunschweig, where he conducted doctoral research on bacterial pathogens and human tissue models. He then carried out postdoctoral studies at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States, focusing on RNA regulation, AI-assisted peptide design, and human iPSC models. This transition from experimental to computational biology allowed him to gain firsthand experience of diverse scientific cultures and research approaches across countries.

In this seminar, Dr. Karagöz will compare the methodological perspectives and intellectual distinctions of three scientific cultures—Turkey, Germany, and the United States—based on his own experiences. His talk will address the impact of transitioning from laboratory-based experimental biology to high-performance computational infrastructures (HPC), how interdisciplinary collaborations foster scientific creativity, and how the relationship between data and experimentation differs across research cultures.

The seminar will also discuss topics such as sustainable productivity in international research environments, effective scientific communication, academic development, and interdisciplinary career planning in the natural sciences. Participants will have the opportunity to hear comparative insights from Dr. Karagöz’s experiences in different countries—ranging from project design to implementation, and from publication to grant applications.

The event is intended for graduate students, researchers, and faculty members working in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, biostatistics, and related fields. Attendees will gain valuable perspectives on integrating experimental and computational methods, modern data analysis and modeling approaches, and building an effective research profile in international academic settings.

The seminar will be held in Turkish, is free of charge, and open to all interested participants.
