SAYZEK-ATP First Place!

22.07.2025

As part of the SAYZEK-ATP program (Cluster for AI Skills in Defense Industry - Academic Thesis Program), which was launched in September 2024 through a cooperation between the Defense Industry Presidency Academy (SSB) and the Turkish Higher Education Council (YÖK), our university has achieved significant success. SAYZEK-ATP aims to connect university students in the field of artificial intelligence with defense industry companies in Turkey and to link academic production with industry-specific requirements. The projects presented in three phases in January, March, and June 2025 were evaluated by reviewers and ranked accordingly.

This year, the program received:
  •  421 applications were submitted,
  •  Students from 119 different universities and 58 different disciplines were involved,
  • A total of 356 projects were accepted, of which 288 were individual projects and 68 were team projects.
In this demanding selection process, the final project submitted by Hilal Ebru Duran under the supervision of our faculty member Dr. Dilek Göksel Duru was awarded first place in her subject area.

The award-winning project, titled “Artificial Neural Network-Based Garbling Detection in IFF Systems within Secondary Surveillance Radars,” focuses on detecting garbling—signal interference—in Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF) systems used in Secondary Surveillance Radars (SSR). While the literature offers limited machine learning approaches for garbling detection, this study introduces a novel perspective by leveraging advanced signal processing and artificial intelligence techniques to address the problem with greater accuracy and adaptability.

We would like to congratulate our faculty member Dr. Dilek Göksel Duru and our student Hilal Ebru Duran, on their outstanding work and well-deserved first place and wish them continued success in their academic careers.
